"Have mercy on me, Oh God, according to your unfailing love;"
This is how David starts psalm 51. He is the king and has just committed adultery with Bathsheba. He is asking God for forgiveness. Back then you were stoned for doing the sin of adultery. God had mercy on David, because he came to God with a humble and contrite heart (verses 3, 14, 17). David was Israel's hero of that day, not because he was perfect, but because he knew his place before God. He fell the farthest, but he couldn't fall beyond the love of God, his forgiving saviour.
Lord, help us to come to you with a humble and contrite heart, like David. Help us to turn to you in our darkest need and trial. Amen
